Google Fixes Android App Crash Overnight
Late Saturday into early Sunday, Android users experienced an issue where the Google app kept crashing with a “Google keeps stopping” error.
This affected users who tried to search or open the app, causing it to close immediately.
Some older versions of the app were also impacted, but uninstalling updates didn't resolve the problem, according to reports from 9to5Google.
What Wasn’t Working:
When users tried to open the Google app from the home screen, it would briefly load before crashing back to the home screen. The Google Search widget also malfunctioned, displaying previous search queries before crashing.
Other features like the Pixel Launcher search bar, Google Discover, and Voice Search were also affected, all leading to the same “Google keeps stopping” error. Devices running both Android 14 and 15, including Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones, were impacted.
However, some services, such as Google Assistant, Google Lens, and the mobile version of google.com accessed through Chrome, worked fine, showing that the problem was limited to the Google app on Android.
Google Fixed the Issue:
By around 11:00 PM PT, some users began to see improvements, and Google officially acknowledged the “service disruption” at 11:07 PM PT on Saturday. The company recommended clearing the app’s cache and data. By 1:11 AM PT on September 15, Google announced the problem was fully resolved, with no further updates required.
