Rejoice, bad spellers! Microsoft finally added spellcheck to Notepad after 41 years. We’ll show you how to get spellcheck in Notepad and how it works to prevent mistakes like our awkward headline here.

Microsoft Notepad Finally Gets Spellcheck Feature

Microsoft Adds Spellcheck to Notepad

Notepad may not be the flashiest Microsoft app, but lacking spellcheck for so long seemed almost unfair. While almost every device has had this feature for years, Notepad lagged behind. In March, Microsoft announced that spellcheck was coming to its Insider program. Now, it's finally available to all users, rolling out this week.

How Spellcheck Works in Microsoft Notepad

In the latest version of Notepad on Windows 11, spellcheck is automatically enabled. Misspelled words are highlighted with the familiar red squiggle. Simply click on the word or use the Shift + F10 shortcut to see a list of suggested corrections. Choose the correct word, and it will replace the misspelled one.

You can also ignore words or add them to the dictionary to prevent them from being flagged again, which is useful for names or brands. If you don't need spellcheck, such as when working with code, you can turn it off in the settings menu.

Microsoft Notepad’s New Makeover

If you haven't used Notepad in a while, you might be surprised to find out that it finally has spellcheck. But that's not all. Microsoft has been adding several quality-of-life features to the app. While it will never have the full functionality of Microsoft Word, it’s become quite capable.

Last December, Notepad received a character counter, eliminating the need for third-party plugins. It also now includes an auto-save feature and a native dark mode.

Additionally, Copilot has been integrated into Notepad, marking its most significant technological upgrade. The 'Explain with Copilot' feature lets users analyze text directly within the app.
