Microsoft Streamlines: 1,000 Job Cuts Signal Focus on Strategic Growth
Microsoft's Workforce Changes: Microsoft announces layoffs with a focus on its Strategic Missions and Technologies organization.
Microsoft Initiates Layoffs: Microsoft is reportedly undergoing a wave of layoffs, with over 1,000 employees set to be affected across various units. This comes after the tech giant announced plans to cut 10,000 roles throughout 2023. According to The Information, most of the job cuts are concentrated within the company’s Strategic Missions and Technologies organization, catering to businesses with specialized needs such as telecom firms and space companies.
Amidst Microsoft's layoffs, CEO Satya Nadella addresses attendees at the Microsoft Build conference held at the Seattle Convention Center Summit Building in Seattle, Washington, as reported by AFP.
The report also suggests that Microsoft is trimming jobs in its mixed reality unit, although it affirms continued support for the HoloLens 2 augmented reality device. CNBC further notes that the company frames these cuts as a necessary aspect of managing business operations while prioritizing hiring in strategic growth areas.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the restructuring of the Mixed Reality organization, stating, “We remain fully committed to the Department of Defense’s IVAS program and will continue to deliver cutting-edge technology to support our soldiers. In addition, we will continue to invest in W365 to reach the broader Mixed Reality hardware ecosystem. We will continue to sell HoloLens 2 while supporting existing HoloLens 2 customers and partners.”
