Google's Crackdown: Ad Block for AI-Generated Explicit Content on Apps and Websites

Google is overhauling its ad content guidelines, meaning explicit ads will soon be axed by the company.

Google is cracking down on advertisers peddling apps capable of generating nude images. Despite its longstanding strict policy against such ads, starting this month, Google is poised to come down hard on offenders, blocking both the content and apps promoting these services. These enforcement measures will roll out by the end of May, leading to the direct removal of such ads from the Play Store.

Google and Apple are intensifying their efforts to combat the proliferation of AI-generated images and content, necessitating updates to their content and app store regulations. While Google is implementing new measures, Apple is also in the fray, taking down apps associated with illicit activities. Reports reveal Apple's removal of numerous apps enabling the creation of AI-generated explicit images without consent, a violation of privacy norms.

These apps, luring users with promises of AI-based editing and face swaps, have been found on platforms like Instagram. Google's strategy involves a combination of human reviews and automation, resulting in the removal of 1.8 billion ads for policy violations. Despite attempts to appear benign, apps facilitating AI-generated explicit content often engage in deceptive marketing tactics, posing challenges for both companies in maintaining platform integrity.
