What Jensen Huang’s Japan Visit Could Mean for the Future of AI
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spent two busy days in Tokyo on July 15 and 16, but this wasn't just another business trip. It felt like the beginning of a much bigger story.
After visiting Taiwan and South Korea in recent months, Huang arrived in Japan with one clear message: the future of AI won't just live inside computers—it will work alongside people in factories, robots, and machines. Japan, with its world-famous manufacturing industry, could become one of the biggest players in making that future real.
His meetings led to major partnerships across Japan's technology industry, including plans for a national AI factory, collaborations with robotics companies, and agreements with suppliers that will help build Nvidia's next generation of AI chips. The excitement was easy to see. Japan isn't just adopting AI—it wants to help shape its future.
A Full-Circle Moment for Nvidia and Japan
There is also an emotional side to this story.
Around 30 years ago, when Nvidia was struggling financially, a $5 million investment from Sega helped the young company survive. Today, Nvidia has grown into one of the world's most valuable technology companies. Now, history is coming full circle as Nvidia and Japan are once again joining forces—this time to build the next era of physical AI.
Noetra: Japan's Big AI Dream
Japan doesn't want to depend completely on American or Chinese AI systems for its factories, robots, or future industries.
To change that, nearly 44 Japanese companies, including SoftBank, Sony, NEC, and Honda, have come together under a new project called Noetra. The Japanese government plans to invest up to ¥1 trillion ($6.2 billion) over the next five years to create AI models designed specifically for robots, vehicles, and industrial machines.
While Japan wants to own the AI software, Nvidia will provide the computing power behind it.
The company plans to build a massive Vera Rubin AI Factory, expected to launch in 2028. Packed with thousands of next-generation CPUs and GPUs, the data center will train extremely large AI models for Japan's future industries.
The roadmap is ambitious:
- 2026: AI reasoning model focused on Japanese language.
- 2028: Multimodal AI that understands text, images, video, and audio.
- 2030: "Real-World Native AI" designed to control robots and machines.
Japan's Robotics Industry Joins Nvidia
Some of Japan's biggest industrial companies are also moving closer to Nvidia.
Fanuc, Yaskawa, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, Sony, SoftBank, Kubota, and robotics group AIRoA plan to build AI systems using Nvidia's Cosmos models.
During the Tokyo visit, Nvidia introduced Cosmos 3 Edge, allowing AI models to run directly inside robots using Jetson Thor chips instead of depending on cloud servers.
Several companies have already started testing these technologies, while Honda R&D and Omron are actively building new robotics solutions around them.
As Huang said,
"The next frontier of AI is in the physical world. Japan invented modern manufacturing, and now it has the opportunity to reinvent it for the age of intelligent industries."
Toyota Expands Its AI Partnership
Toyota is also deepening its relationship with Nvidia.
The automaker already uses Nvidia technology in many areas, but the partnership is growing further—from self-driving software and traffic analysis to factory simulations that improve vehicle production.
Rather than chasing fully autonomous driving immediately, Toyota continues to focus on advanced driver-assistance systems that still keep human drivers involved, reflecting its more cautious approach.
Why This Matters
Japan faces one major challenge: a rapidly shrinking workforce.
AI-powered robots could help fill labor shortages while keeping factories productive. The government wants to deploy 10 million AI-enabled robots across 18 industries by 2040, supported by nearly $65 billion in combined public and private investment.
Even bigger is Japan's long-term goal.
Through its AI Robotics Strategy, the country hopes to capture over 30% of the global AI robotics market by 2040, a market valued at around ¥20 trillion ($133 billion).
Behind this plan is another important objective—technology independence.
As the United States and China race ahead in AI, Japan wants its own AI models, its own computing infrastructure, and greater control over its technological future. Yet there is an interesting reality: while Japan wants AI independence, the computing power making it possible still comes from Nvidia's American chips.
Jensen Huang's Bigger Strategy
Huang didn't simply announce partnerships—he built relationships.
During his visit, he met leaders from Toyota, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Fujitsu, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and many others. Discussions ranged from formal business meetings to casual dinners with supply-chain executives, showing Nvidia's effort to strengthen ties across Japan's entire technology ecosystem.
It's a strategy Huang has followed across Asia. After major announcements in Taiwan and South Korea, Tokyo became the next stop in Nvidia's growing vision for AI.
This visit wasn't just about selling chips. It was about building trust, long-term partnerships, and preparing for a future where AI moves beyond chatbots and data centers into the real world—inside factories, vehicles, and robots.
If these plans succeed, Japan may not simply adopt the next wave of AI. It could become one of the countries leading it.
