Qualcomm Expands AI Capabilities with VinAI Acquisition
In a significant move to strengthen its artificial intelligence expertise, Qualcomm has acquired the generative AI division of VinAI, a Hanoi-based AI research company. While the financial details remain undisclosed, the acquisition highlights Qualcomm’s growing commitment to AI innovation.
VinAI, founded by former DeepMind research scientist Hung Bui in 2019, specializes in advanced AI solutions, particularly in computer vision and language models. The company has made a name for itself in AI-powered automotive technologies, including in-cabin monitoring, security systems, and smart parking solutions.
“This acquisition reflects our dedication to pushing the boundaries of AI research and development,” said Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President of Engineering. “By bringing in the talented minds from VinAI, we’re enhancing our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions that can transform industries and improve everyday experiences for consumers.”
Hung Bui’s journey with VinAI has been one of passion and perseverance. Under his leadership, the company grew to a team of around 200 employees, with offices in Hanoi, the U.S., and Australia. Bui has always believed in the power of AI to change lives, and now, as he joins Qualcomm following the acquisition, he sees even greater potential ahead.
“Our expertise in generative AI and machine learning will now contribute to Qualcomm’s innovations across smartphones, PCs, and automotive technology,” Bui shared. “We’re excited to help shape the future of AI and bring new possibilities to people around the world.”
This marks Qualcomm’s second major AI-related acquisition this year, following its purchase of Edge Impulse, a German AI and Internet of Things company, in March. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has emphasized the company’s focus on edge AI—technology that allows devices to run AI without relying on cloud infrastructure—as a key driver of future growth.
For Qualcomm, this isn’t just a business deal; it’s a step toward a future where AI seamlessly integrates into everyday life, making technology smarter, more efficient, and more human-centered.
