  • Taylor Swift Backs Kamala Harris After AI Misinfo Sparks Clarification

Pop star Taylor Swift has voiced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, after being caught up in an incident involving AI-generated fake images.

The images wrongly showed Swift endorsing Donald Trump, which pushed her to speak out about her political stance and the dangers of AI misinformation.

On September 10, Swift took to Instagram to clear things up with her 283 million followers. She shared her decision to back Harris, explaining that the fake AI images circulating on Trump’s social media made it necessary for her to clarify where she stands.

In late August, Trump’s Truth Social account posted AI-created images, one of which falsely depicted Swift supporting him with a message encouraging people to vote for him. Disturbed by the spread of such fake information, Swift emphasized the importance of transparency and the need to address AI's potential to mislead people, especially with the election approaching.

Swift also praised Kamala Harris for her strong leadership, specifically mentioning her dedication to issues like reproductive rights, which she feels need bold and decisive action.

This incident highlights the growing problem of AI being used to spread false information in politics. Earlier in the year, AI was even used to send robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden to voters in New Hampshire. In response to such misuse, tech companies like Google and Midjourney have been tightening their rules to prevent AI from creating misleading content about political figures. Midjourney, for example, has stopped allowing users to make fake images of public figures like Biden and Trump to reduce the risk of election-related AI abuse.
