Microsoft Resolves Issue Causing Microsoft 365 Apps to Crash While Typing

Microsoft has fixed a bug that was causing apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote in Microsoft 365 to crash while typing or checking spelling.

The problem affected users running Version 2407 Build 17830.20138 or higher of these Microsoft 365 apps. If you’re unsure whether this issue impacts you, you can check the Windows Event Viewer for Event 1000 or 1001, which might show an error with the code 0xc0000005.

The crash was caused by a version mismatch between Office 2016 language packs and the newer Microsoft 365 apps when the language pack wasn’t updated. Microsoft explained that having both Office 2016 and Microsoft 365 apps installed on the same system can cause problems, as the two versions use different installation methods. For example, language files like "mscss7it.dll" for Italian or "mscss7de.dll" for German can cause issues if outdated.

Microsoft has now released a fix for this problem in these builds of Microsoft 365:

  • Beta Channel: Version 2409 (Build 18021.15000)
  • Current Channel Preview: Version 2409 (Build 18025.20000)
  • Current Channel: Version 2409 (Build 18025.20000), which will be available on September 24th.

To fully resolve the issue, Microsoft recommends users update to the latest version and uninstall any old Office 2016 proofing tools if they are using a newer Office version. Language packs should also be updated automatically with Office updates.

If you continue to experience crashes after installing the update, Microsoft advises performing an online Office repair. If the problem persists, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the language pack following Microsoft’s support instructions.

In addition to this, last month, Microsoft provided temporary fixes for issues causing Outlook crashes and Gmail sign-in problems for some classic Outlook users.
