Microsoft Reportedly Lays Off Entire Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team
Microsoft has reportedly laid off its entire Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team, citing their reduced relevance to current business operations.
According to an email seen by Business Insider, a Microsoft team leader stated, "True systems-change work associated with DEI programs everywhere are no longer business-critical or as smart as they were in 2020."
The report indicates that Microsoft eliminated the DEI team due to "changing business needs."
Back in 2020, Microsoft had announced plans to double the number of Black and African American leaders within the company and among its suppliers. It remains unclear whether these goals were achieved.
Despite the layoffs, a Microsoft representative affirmed the company's continued commitment to diversity and inclusion efforts. Jeff Jones, a Microsoft spokesperson, told Business Insider, "Our D&I commitments remain unchanged. Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering, and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritizing accountability, and continuing to focus on this work."
A June poll by The Washington Post found that 61% of Americans believe it is beneficial for companies to invest in DEI initiatives.
Recently, the home improvement chain Tractor Supply also ended its DEI programs following public backlash.
