Meta Introduces 'AI Info' Labels for Greater Transparency

Transition to ‘AI Info’ Label

Meta is replacing the ‘Made with AI’ label with the ‘AI Info’ label across its platforms. This update aims to provide clearer information about AI involvement in content creation. When users click on the label, they will now receive more context, including information about minor AI-assisted edits, such as retouching tools.

Despite the label change, Meta will continue to use technical metadata standards like C2PA and IPTC to detect AI usage in photos. Tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill, used for object removal, may still trigger the ‘AI Info’ label. Meta's goal is to help users understand that AI may have been involved in the content creation process without necessarily generating the entire image.

Handling Manipulated Media

Following feedback from the Oversight Board, Meta is updating its approach to manipulated media on its platforms. The ‘AI Info’ labels will now be applied to a broader range of AI-generated content, including videos, audio, and images, to enhance transparency and context while maintaining freedom of expression.

Content posing a high risk of deceiving the public will receive more prominent labeling. Such content will remain on the platforms unless it violates Community Standards, such as policies against voter interference or violence.

Starting in July, Meta will stop removing content solely based on its manipulated media policy to help users become familiar with the new labeling process. Additionally, Meta plans to collaborate with industry partners to establish common standards for identifying AI-generated content.
