Microsoft Launcher Beta Introduces New Copilot Feature
Microsoft is integrating AI into modern operating systems with the launch of the Copilot+ PC program for Windows devices, such as the new Surface Laptop. For smartphones, the company is bringing Copilot to Android’s homescreen through an upcoming version of Microsoft Launcher.
Currently in beta, you can join the beta program to try it out now, or wait for the stable version after testing completes.
You can start a chat with the AI using the Bing/Copilot button in the search widget. The latest beta version also integrates Copilot into the Feed (the leftmost homescreen pane), where the Glance and News tabs are located.
Here’s what the changelog has to say:
- Effortless Access: With just a swipe, Copilot is ready to assist you with answers and content creation.
- Creative Power: Easily generate images and text directly from your mobile feed using simple prompts.
- Pro Performance: Copilot Pro users can experience more responsive and faster interactions.
When using Copilot, you can type your questions or use voice input. Additionally, you can open an image from your gallery and ask questions about it. However, Copilot currently has some limitations; for instance, it cannot set an alarm or turn off the phone’s Wi-Fi.
Future updates will expand Copilot's functionality through plugins. Currently, there are three available: Search (enabled by default), Instacart (for recipes and meal plans), and Kayak (for searching flights, accommodations, and car rentals). If Copilot gains popularity on Android, more companies are likely to develop plugins for it.
To try the new Microsoft Launcher with Copilot integration, download it from the Google Play Store and enroll in the Beta program. Be sure to check for updates after the initial install, as the version you download may be older (we received an update just five minutes after enrolling in the Beta program).
