Time is running out to participate in a recent class action lawsuit against Instagram. Illinois residents stand to benefit from a $68.5 million settlement, but only if they act before September 27th.

The lawsuit alleges that Instagram's parent company, Meta, unlawfully collected biometric data. While Meta denies these claims, it is settling for a fraction of its vast net worth to resolve the matter.

To be eligible, you must have used Instagram within Illinois between August 10th, 2015, and August 16th, 2023 – a considerable number of individuals. Here's how to file your claim and anticipate payment.

Insights on the Latest Instagram Settlement: What You Need to Understand

In the class action lawsuit titled “Parris v. Meta Platforms Inc, case no 2023LA000672,” it is alleged that Meta Platforms, Inc. violated the Biometric Information Privacy Act by purportedly collecting and storing “biometric identifiers and/or biometric information” through Instagram without adhering to the act’s requirements.

As the Biometric Information Privacy Act is specific to Illinois, the settlement pertains to residents of this state. A comprehensive notice summarizing the particulars is available for review online.

The settlement offers five options to all members of the Settlement Class, though the deadlines have elapsed for a few. Beginning with the simplest: Taking no action. This results in no settlement payout and forfeits the right to pursue an individual lawsuit against Meta regarding these claims.

For those who find this option unfavorable, there are alternatives: Participating in a hearing to voice your stance, or lodging a written objection – though the deadline for objection was August 16th, 2023, hence no longer viable. This aspect can still be raised during the hearing.

The opportunity to request exclusion has also lapsed, with the deadline set for August 16th. However, one final avenue remains for potential compensation: Submitting a claim form.

How to Submit a Claim Form

Your slice of the $68.5 million pie awaits if you meet the criteria and submit a claim. Head over to the claim form to get started.

Keep an eye on your email for a message regarding this claim—you should find a Notice ID and Confirmation Code to assist you during the filing process.

No worries if you can't locate the email. Simply complete the form as usual and select your preferred payment method from Mastercard, Venmo, Zelle, or a traditional paper check.

Even if you haven't resided in Illinois since 2015, you're still eligible within the eligibility timeframe.

When Will You Get Paid?

Once the administration costs and taxes take their share, you'll divide the settlement among all members of the class.

While there isn't a firm deadline for payment yet, the final hearing is tentatively scheduled for October 11th. Assuming approval, eligible individuals can expect their share within 90 days, or by January 9th, 2024, at the latest.

This settlement adds to the ongoing saga of tech giant lawsuits, joining the ranks of previous cases involving Google, Zoom, and Meta's flagship social network, Facebook.
