Meta Unveils Exciting AI-Powered Updates: A Guide to Leveraging the Latest Features
Meta Steps Up in the AI Race: Introducing a ChatGPT-like Bot, Enhanced AI Features Across Platforms, and Llama 3
This week marks a pivotal moment in the AI landscape as Meta launches a new web chatbot reminiscent of ChatGPT, boosts AI capabilities across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and unveils its latest model, Llama 3.
Nearly half the global population, or almost four billion users, engage with Meta's platforms. Yet, the rollout of these updates will be staggered, not immediately available to all.
Our guide will walk you through how to tap into Meta's AI enhancements on its various platforms, explore the new web app, and address a significant mishap by Meta AI in its early days of broader deployment.
How to Use Meta AI on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram
Meta AI has just upgraded your chatting experience, making it possible to use AI directly within Facebook Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Now, there’s no need to exit your app to Google information; just bring up Meta AI like you're messaging a friend.
In group chats, you can also summon Meta AI by typing "@MetaAI" to ask for recommendations, information, or creative ideas.
Currently, this feature is rolling out first in the US, Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with more regions to follow.
Adding to the excitement, Meta is enhancing its capabilities with a new feature that allows users to generate images from text instantly. This "Imagine" feature is being tested in beta on WhatsApp and included in Meta’s new web tool, though you'll need to log in to use it and view your chat history.
Moreover, for the first time, Meta’s AI chatbot is available as a standalone application, providing a ChatGPT-like experience directly through Meta's suite of tools.
How to Use Meta’s Chatbot, With Llama 3
This week saw the debut of Meta AI, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg heralding it as "the most intelligent AI assistant available for free use." It's equipped with Llama 3, which is Meta's most sophisticated and publicly accessible Large Language Model yet.
The design and user interface of Meta AI bear a striking resemblance to a blend of ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, featuring similar response structures and color themes.
Meta suggests signing into Facebook when you first interact with the chatbot, but currently, it’s possible to use the service without logging in—though it will prompt you to log in with each new conversation initiation.
Unlike its social media counterparts, Meta AI is universally accessible; anyone can reach it by simply searching online and navigating to its page.
Meta’s AI Already Makes Blunder
AI tools often spark debates shortly after their debut—Bard (recently renamed Gemini) slipped up with an inaccurate statement during its first showcase, and X’s chatbot Grok stirred controversy among right-leaning users due to its perceived "woke" replies.
Meta AI is already following suit, stirring buzz with unusual activity. According to Sky News, the AI was caught making an odd claim in a private parenting group on Facebook, asserting it had raised a disabled child. The statement was quickly retracted with an apology from the chatbot after group members raised concerns.
Given its profound integration into some of the world’s largest social platforms, it's likely that more unexpected responses are on the horizon for Meta AI.
